“I’d Rather It Come from Me”: Hozier remembers the story that inspired Too Sweet’s lyrics and also features Cillian Murphy

Hozier, 34, whose real name is Andrew John Hozier-Byrne, recalls a drunken encounter that eventually inspired some of the lyrics to his song Too Sweet. This story unexpectedly features Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy.

According to People Magazine, the singer revealed this story in August onstage at the Xcel Energy Center in Minnesota during his Unreal Unearth tour. A clip of this moment was shared on TikTok by a concertgoer on August 18, according to People Magazine.

During the show, the Take Me to Church singer said, “I probably would have gone to my grave without telling it, but it’s a pretty good story and I’d rather it come from me.” He went on to explain that he was meeting up with his “best old mate” the night before his flight. He mentioned that he hadn’t even started packing when they had their first drinks.

The singer stated that they drank a lot that night, as one does. The next thing he knew, his friend suddenly woke him up the next morning. Hozier stated that he got up quickly, and since he is quite tall, he joked that if he fell down, he would be “halfway home.”

The singer revealed: “I was running at full speed and I just thought, ‘Boom!’ My head hit the window with such force.” Even after hitting the wall, he tried to get up again and managed to pack his things and reach the airport, despite being in “bad shape.”

He said: “I’m totally messed up. You know, that kind of hangover where you’re shaking.” The singer then mentioned that he looked to his left on the plane and saw a “famous Irish actor.” The Work Song singer said that he also gets starstruck when he sees someone he’s only seen a few times on screen.

Hozier continued, “And when I see Cillian Murphy to my left…” telling himself not to stare. The singer mentioned that he is a huge fan of the actor and that he started scratching the spot where he fell, only to find that it was “wet.”

Hozier added: “I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is wet.’ So I’m sitting on the plane and I’m looking at my fingers like they’re bleeding a little bit.”

The singer then turned to his left and the actor sat in his seat and asked how it went. The singer responded by staying “cool.”

He further revealed that this unusual travel experience inspired Too Sweet’s lyrics, especially the part where he fell down many times. Hozier mentioned, “It’s the line ‘I aim low, I aim right and the ground is where I’m going.’ I never told Cillian Murphy that. I didn’t have the courage to tell him at the time what state I was in.”
