Green Lake County officials report using a sonar boat in search of missing kayaker

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office released an update Monday on a 44-year-old missing kayaker.

According to the department’s Facebook page, a sonar boat called “Bruce’s Legacy” will now be used in the search.

Authorities are asking the public to avoid this boat if they see it on Big Green Lake.

It will be in operation over the next few days and the aerial search will continue every morning with a drone.

The Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced in a Facebook post after 8:30 a.m. on August 12 that it was searching for the kayaker on Big Green Lake.

The agency said it learned from the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office that a man had not returned home from a kayaking trip on the lake the night before. Officers found an empty, upside-down kayak with a life jacket still attached. The sheriff’s office added that it found the man’s vehicle near Dodge Memorial Park.

On August 13, search crews deployed a drone and sent out boats to search the lake in a grid pattern. The sheriff’s office said crews searched the lake’s deepest waters on August 14.

Big Green Lake is the deepest natural inland lake in the state, with a maximum depth of 236 feet.
