Bombers host “Big League Baseball Classic”

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – In Dubois County, the Bombers hosted a special game Saturday night where fans got to see some familiar names in action.

Before the game, we had a chance to speak with former St. Louis Cardinal Rick Ankiel and three-time All-Star Bret Boone, both of whom were definitely cautiously excited before the game.

“It’s always great to get back in there and see what you think you can do and then find out what you can really do. But it’s great to see the guys and it’s great to have a uniform out there again,” said former Cardinal player Rick Ankiel.

“We do events all season long, a lot of meet-and-greets all over the country. We’ll see, this is going to test us tonight, this is a little more physical than I normally do,” Bret Boone said.

Also present and ready for his role as first baseman is Cardinals Hall of Fame member Ray Lankford.

“It’s nice to come back, reconnect with the fans and see some of the guys you haven’t seen in a long time. I haven’t swung a bat in a couple of years, so I’m a little rusty, but we’re going to have fun,” Lankford said.

Another name that diehard Bombers fans have seen play before, Steve Cishek was back to play at League Stadium and catch up with some old friends.

“I’m actually staying at my old host family’s house, so I’m getting nostalgic with some of my old teammates. Mills Rogers played here a few years after me. We both went to Carson-Newman together and played baseball there. It’s pretty cool to have some of those guys back here.”
