Republicans in Colorado vote to remove far-right chairman

The Colorado Republican Party voted Sunday to remove far-right Rep. Dave Williams as its chairman after months of stoking controversy. El Paso County District Attorney Michael Allen said The New York Times that Williams faced an “open revolt” in the state party. Allen, who prosecuted the anti-LGBTQ Colorado Springs mass murderer, accused Williams of spreading “hateful” posts against the community using official state party resources. In June, Williams sent a mass email with the subject line “God Hates Pride,” attacking LGBTQ+ people as “godless groomers,” Colorado Public Radio reported. That same month, the state party’s social media posted the message “Burn all #Pride flags this June.” Colorado Republican leaders pushed for Williams’ ouster that same month. Williams also faces a Federal Election Commission complaint accusing him of using state party mailing lists in his primary campaign for a House seat. Williams lost the June primary to radio host Jeff Crank. Williams condemned Sunday’s vote, in which only about 180 of the party’s 400 officials participated. In a statement to the Associated Press, Williams said his dismissal was orchestrated by a “fringe minority group” and called Sunday’s proceedings a “farce.”
