The flight, a Boeing 737-700, was en route to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport when the crew reported possible engine failure, the FAA said. According to Alaska Airlines, the flight returned to the airport shortly after takeoff after the number 1 engine on the left side of the plane failed.

“Commendations are due to the crew who followed standard procedures in this situation and landed safely without incident,” the airline said in a statement. “We worked hard yesterday afternoon to care for our guests and facilitate their travel to Oakland, and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

The FAA said it would investigate the incident.
