Varuna, the National Writers’ House, has announced the five recipients of its First Nations Fellowships for 2024.

The five successful applicants (and their manuscripts) are:

  • Sharleigh Crittenden for “The Children Nobody Wanted”
  • Kathryn Gledhill-Tucker for “When We Taught Sand to Think”

  • Deborah Roach for “Guwalanha”
  • Melanie Saward for “The Next Chapter”.

Recipients, selected by judges Jasmin McGaughey and Rachel Bin Salleh, will participate in a week-long residency at Varuna, which includes mentoring and group reading sessions.

The jury also praised Mariah Sweetman for her work “Blondie”. Sweetman will also have the opportunity to take part in a residency in Varuna.

Marie Elena Ellis, recipient of the 2024 Arts NT Fellowship for her work in the Arrernte language “I Am the Desert”, will also accompany the fellows during their stay in Varuna.

The First Nations Fellowship program began in 2017 with support from the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund.
