Green Bay Police considering possible move to historic downtown building

  • Due to space and technology constraints, the Green Bay Police Department is considering moving its headquarters to the historic Press-Gazette building on Walnut Street.
  • Captain Ben Allen speaks about the need for a new facility to improve operations and public access and to address parking issues.
  • The project is still in its early stages. The first step is a review by the Finance Committee next week and, if approved, an analysis of the space requirements.

The Green Bay Police Department is considering a major move, moving its headquarters to the historic Press-Gazette building on Walnut Street. This potential move, just two minutes from its current location on South Adams Street, is another step toward reality.

Earlier this week, we reported on the proposal to move police headquarters to this vacant building across from City Hall. Captain Ben Allen emphasized the need for more space, citing that the current building does not have enough room for modern law enforcement technology and evidence storage.

Captain Allen says a new, spacious facility would improve workflow, improve public access and solve parking problems. He stressed that this is a long-term project and the first major step will come next week when the Finance Committee reviews the proposal. If approved, a space needs analysis with architects will follow soon after.

“There’s a lot of preparatory work that needs to be done,” Allen said. “You know, next Tuesday will hopefully be the first big step, city council approval. Then we’ll work with the architects on the space needs analysis, which will actually start relatively soon.”

This project is still in its early stages, but represents a significant development for the Green Bay Police Department as it seeks to better serve the community.
