A 4-way stop sign will be installed at a dangerous intersection in Cass County

CASS COUNTY, Mich. (WNDU) – A series of accidents at an intersection has caught the attention of Cass County residents.

The intersection of Pokagon Highway and Dailey Road will be getting some updates next week. Starting Tuesday, this intersection will officially be converted to a four-stop sign intersection with LED stop signs and stop warnings.

“I only mow there at certain times of the day when there’s hopefully less traffic. But it’s still scary,” said Sharon Collins, a resident on the corner. “And they’ve been clearing away those rocks. We put those rocks there when we remodeled the house so they wouldn’t come into the yard or the house, because we’ve seen them come into the yard before.”

Last May, a collision between two cars knocked down her power line, causing a fire that burned a patch of her lawn.

“They had to put up a new power pole,” Collins said. “That took some time, the power was out for a while.”

For the residents, however, this is nothing new. Just a few years ago, a bus crashed into another building on their property, they report.

This dangerous intersection also caught the attention of the Cass County Road Commission, resulting in some safety measures that officials hope will make the area safer.

“When you look at the accident numbers and what types of accidents have occurred, we follow national standards to determine when to put in four-way intersections. And there have been enough accidents at this intersection to get approval for it,” said Joe Bellina, chief engineer of the Cass County Road Commission.

The highway authority hopes that the changes will reduce the number of accidents at this intersection.
