Green Bay faces competition

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WMTV) – The Packers concluded their preseason campaign with a 30-7 win over the Baltimore Ravens at Lambeau Field on Saturday afternoon.

While there are always questions about the roster at the beginning of a season, Green Bay faces tough competition in kicking.

Anders Carlson, a sophomore, and Greg Joseph, a five-year starter. Both kickers played against the Ravens. Joseph was 2/2, including a 55-yard kick. Carlson, meanwhile, was 1/2 and hit a 54-yard kick but missed a chip shot.

Carlson struggled at the end of last season, culminating in a missed 41-yard throw in the fourth quarter of the NFC Championship game against the Niners that would have given the Packers a seven-point lead. The former Auburn Tiger missed a kick in 10 of his last 12 games and was the league leader in missed kicks, so the Packers brought in former Minnesota Viking Joseph.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has no idea who his starting kicker will be in Week 1.

“You know, it’s honestly not a question for me,” LaFleur said. “I think we have a really good sample size and then we’ll see what happens in the league. But there were certainly some really good moments, the two guys went in and hit a 54-yarder and a 55-yarder. And then there was a whole moment where we missed a chip shot, so you know, again, a lot of good stuff. There are some where we know we can be better and we’ll just wait and see.”

The Packers open the regular season on September 6 in Brazil against the Eagles.
