International demand for Vietnamese green coffee beans is increasing sharply

International demand for Vietnamese green coffee beans surged in 2024, with total export earnings exceeding $2.4 billion from January to May.

According to a report by Research and Markets, Vietnam’s green coffee bean export market is expected to grow from $3.16 billion in 2024 to $4.05 billion in 2033, a compound annual growth rate of 2.8 percent.

The main coffee bean exporters in the Asia-Pacific region and worldwide include Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia and Ethiopia. Vietnam is a major supplier of Robusta coffee and has a significant position in the world green coffee bean market.

In Vietnam, the coffee industry is an important agricultural sector, especially for the production and export of Robusta coffee. Thanks to favorable climate and soil conditions, Vietnam has become the second largest coffee producer in the world and exports large quantities to major coffee-consuming countries such as the United States, Germany and Italy.

The report pointed out that coffee is one of Vietnam’s top six agricultural products, generating revenues of over US$3 billion, with most of the coffee exported as green beans. In 2023, Vietnam’s total export value of green coffee beans exceeded US$3.2 billion. In 2024, the estimated coffee growing area in Vietnam will be 600,000 hectares. Due to climate change and extreme weather conditions, coffee-growing regions worldwide are facing lower yields, leading to higher coffee prices. Despite these challenges, Vietnam’s annual coffee production remains at about 1.3 million tons.

From 2021 to 2024, Switzerland, Singapore and the Netherlands were the main destinations for Vietnam’s green coffee bean exports. The main companies importing these products from Vietnam include Bero Coffee Singapore, Louis Dreyfus Company Suisse and Sucafina. Numerous international distribution companies have subsidiaries in Vietnam and play an important role in coffee bean exports. The leading green coffee bean exporters in Vietnam include Intimex Group, Vinh Hiep and Simexco Daklak Ltd.

Overall, world market prices for green coffee beans, especially Robusta beans, have reached their highest level in 15 years due to supply constraints and low coffee reserves, indicating an imbalance between supply and demand and continued growth in market demand.

With the growing world population and changing dietary habits, more and more countries are turning to coffee beverages. Vietnam’s production and export of green coffee beans is becoming increasingly important in international trade. By continuously optimizing cultivation and processing technologies to improve product quality, Vietnam has further consolidated its competitive advantage in the international market. In the coming years, Vietnamese green coffee bean exports are expected to continue to grow.
