Football preview 2024 | Experienced Sandburg aims for long playoff run

Football preview 2024 | Experienced Sandburg aims for long playoff run

CONFERENCE: Southwest Valley Red

HEAD COACH: Troy McAllister

Record 2023: 6-4 (27-7 loss to Minooka in the first round of the Class 8A playoffs)

OUTLOOK: Sandburg turned things around last season, going 6-3 in the regular season to qualify for the playoffs after going just 3-6 in 2022. This year they will play in the new Southwest Valley Conference.

The Eagles have several returners on offense and defense. Senior quarterback Anthony Shelton, who was a starter two seasons ago before a season-ending injury ended his sophomore season, brings plenty of experience and a championship to coach Troy McAllister’s offense. He will send passes to receivers Charlie Snoreck and Jeffrey Bellik, the former a returning starter who had a standout season in 2023.

Junior defensive end Jaden Weaver is 6’2″ and weighs 250 pounds and will pose a problem for the opposing offense. Junior Kai Williams (RB/DB) is a rookie to keep an eye on.

McAllister and the Eagles are preparing for another playoff run in 2023 after their first-round exit.

“Expectations are high this year with several key players returning,” McAllister said. “The goal is to play football in November.”

DID YOU KNOW? The Eagles will face five opponents they played last season, going 2-3 in those matches with wins over Oak Forest and Homewood-Flossmoor.
