At the end of the Marvel Animation presentation at D23, Marvel Studios presented new footage from their upcoming What if…? Spinoff series Marvel Zombiesand this show looks like a lot of fun!
During the presentation, Marvel Animation presented Bryan Andrews confirmed that Marvel Zombies will receive a “Hardcore” rating for TV-MA and said it will also be a four-episode “event series.”
The footage shown showed that Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and Subscribe‘s Katy are the main characters in one of the stories of the series.
In the first clip we saw, there is a city overrun by zombies. Shang Chi and Katy are in the middle of fighting them, and a squadron of helicopters flies through the sky, sweeping the zombies away.
Shang-Chi’s father is sitting in one of the helicopters and jumps out to use the power of the Ten Rings to help fight the zombies. In the middle of the fight, Chang-Chi is bitten in the arm by a zombie.
As he begins to turn into a zombie and the rot travels up his arm, his father saves him by giving him the Ten Rings. The rings travel up Shang-Chi’s arm and stop the infection from spreading any further, but his arm continues to rot.
Since his father is now without the protection of the Ten Rings, he is killed and Shang-Chi and Katy escape in one of the helicopters.
The second clip takes place five years after this event and the world is now a Mad Max style wasteland! There’s a bunch of people driving around in these Mad Max like vehicles and Shang-Chi with his bent arm and Katy are in one of them.
As they race through the desert, the Krees motorcycle gang comes hot on their heels and this is the beginning of a great battle of road aggression.
I liked the footage shown and the series looks like it could be a lot of fun! We’re actually going to get a proper Marvel Zombies story brought to life and that’s pretty exciting!
Set in an alternate reality, the series portrays the Marvel Universe as a new generation of heroes fighting against an ever-expanding zombie plague.
The miracles star Iman Vellani has confirmed that she will reprise her role as Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, in the series and her character will be the focus of the show.
Vellani said, “We did the whole thing. It was incredible. It was so much fun. And I love it – there are a lot of cool characters in the Marvel Zombies show. And Kamala is kind of the center of the show.”
Vellani also referred The Lord of the Rings while speaking about the series to explain Kamala’s role, he said, “They described it to me like this: ‘She’s basically the Frodo of the story.’ And I thought, ‘That’s incredible.'”
There is no information yet about when the series will be released.
