Was it a mistake or was it done maliciously?

Officials at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport are trying to figure out why the internet went down Saturday, causing numerous delays. One of the theories they put forward is that they may have been the victim of a cyberattack.

In a statement, airport officials said the outage was the cause of several delays and may have originated at the Port of Seattle. The incident occurred on Saturday.

“This morning, the Port of Seattle experienced certain system outages that indicate a possible cyberattack,” authorities said. “The port has isolated critical systems and is currently working to restore full operations.”

As of 5:00 p.m. PT, more than 250 flights were affected; 247 were delayed and six were canceled.

“We are working closely with the relevant authorities and partners to assist travelers who may be affected,” the airport said.

Anyone flying to or from Seattle-Tacoma is asked to call their airline about possible changes. The airport is one of the busiest on the West Coast, serving both domestic and international flights.

Just a year ago, two hotels in Las Vegas fell victim to cyberattacks, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced earlier this week that it plans to improve cybersecurity on board aircraft.
