Former President Jimmy Carter said he wanted to live to see his 100th birthday so he could vote for vice president Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential elections.
Carter, who turns 100 on October 1, has been in hospice care for about a year and a half. In June, Carter’s grandson, Jasontold Life in the South that his 99-year-old grandfather “is no longer awake every day.”
However, Jason recently said The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the former president had been “more attentive and interested in politics and the war in Gaza” this month.
Jason said Carter’s son, chipasked him earlier this week if he wanted to live to see his 100th birthday.
“I’m just trying to get myself to vote for Kamala Harris,” Carter said, according to Jason.
The former president would not have to wait until November 5 to cast his vote for Democratic nominee Harris. Early voting in Georgia begins October 15, and mail-in ballots will be sent out up to 29 days before the election.
In the state of Georgia, there are also no laws that prevent a vote from being counted due to a death between early voting and Election Day.
