Hurricane Hone hits Hawaii’s Big Island with strong winds and heavy rain

HILO, Hawaii – A tropical storm warning remains in effect for parts of Hawaii as Hurricane Hone passes south of the archipelago, lashing the region with torrential rains and gusty winds that could have severe impacts on people living in or traveling to the Aloha State.

Communities on Hawaii’s Big Island, such as Hilo, have experienced strong gusts that are expected to continue at least until the start of the new work week. Flash flood warnings were issued for Hawaii’s Big Island early Sunday morning after the National Weather Service announced that rainfall had intensified in some areas, reaching up to 2 inches of rain per hour.
