Races for Michigan Supreme Court offices are officially nonpartisan, meaning candidates appear on the ballot without party affiliation, but nominees are chosen by the party convention.

The Democratic-backed justices currently hold a 4-3 majority. A Republican win in either election would deprive the justices of control of the court, while two Democratic victories would create a 5-2 supermajority.

“It’s about which candidates give Republicans the best chance of winning Michigan for President Trump,” DePerno said in a statement. “It’s also about who can work best off the ballot to get our candidates in office. I can use my knowledge of how elections work to get Republicans in office.”

DePerno rose to prominence after repeatedly questioning the results of the 2020 election, which Trump lost to President Joe Biden. He has been named as a “principal instigator” in the voting machine tampering case and is accused of unlawful possession of a voting machine and conspiracy.

The party had ousted Karamo after months of disputes over finances and strategy. A judge ruled in February that her dismissal was legal and recognized former congressman Pete Hoekstra as the rightful leader.
