Surplus? Gift Orban could leave Lyon five days before the transfer deadline

Super Eagles striker Gift Orban could be forced to leave Lyon before the transfer window closes in order to get playing time, reports Soccernet.ng.

Gift Orban caused a stir in Europe two seasons ago when he moved from Norwegian second division club Stabaek to Belgian Jupiler League Pro club Gent in January 2023.

The Nigerian striker went on a goalscoring streak that saw him score 20 goals and provide two assists in 22 games for Gent. His performances for Gent caught the attention of Europe’s top clubs, including Barcelona, Manchester United and West Ham, who were keeping an eye on him.

However, Orban did not move in the summer and had to wait until January to get his move. He moved to former Ligue 1 champions Lyon for 14 million euros.

Unfortunately, life in Lyon has not been pleasant for the 22-year-old striker. Despite the club’s disappointing run of games since last season, Orban has struggled to secure a place in the starting line-up.

With Pierre Sage at the helm, things seem to have gotten even worse. Orban played a few minutes in pre-season but has not kicked a ball since the start of Ligue 1.

Orban watched from the bench in Lyon’s 3-0 loss to Rennes in the first game of the week, and the Nigerian striker did not even make the matchday squad for Lyon’s second league game against Monaco on Saturday.

According to Le Progres, this was a decision by coach Sage and not due to an injury to the player.

As a reminder, Soccernet.ng had previously reported that Lyon might be willing to let Orban go, especially because the club wants to balance its finances.

With only five days left until the end of the transfer market, Orban may have to move to another club to get more playing time.
