Winneba, Ghana: Ghana’s main opposition party presented its platform for the upcoming presidential elections on Saturday, promising at a rally to eradicate corruption, transform the economy and create jobs.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) attracted thousands to the coastal town of Winneba. Clad in the NDC’s green, black, red and white national colours, supporters danced and chanted while waving placards.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC candidate in the December 7 elections, painted a grim picture of the current state of the West African country under the rule of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its candidate, current Vice President Mahamuda Bawumia.

“Ghanaians can no longer tolerate the suffering, impunity, state capture, hypocrisy, lies and bad governance imposed on them during the two terms of the outgoing government,” Mahama said.

The party’s first vice-presidential candidate, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, attended the rally.

The party promised to fight unemployment, curb the alarming devaluation of Ghana’s currency, the cedi, and set up special courts to deal with corruption cases.

She also promised free tuition for the first year at public universities and initiatives to eliminate period poverty among girls in school.

Mahama described the ruling NPP as “the biggest political fraud that has been served up to Ghanaians since our independence in 1957.”

Although the country is a major gold and cocoa producer, it is battling the worst economic crisis in years and is faced with rampant inflation and high youth unemployment.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, who has led the country since 2017, is stepping down after the expiry of the maximum term of two terms provided for in the constitution.

Mahama, who was president from 2012 to 2017, lost both the 2016 and 2020 elections to Akufo-Addo.

Both candidates this year come from the northern regions of Ghana.
