United expands flights in light of college football rivalries

For some college football fans — like sports fans of all stripes — attending a home game isn’t enough. There are plenty of diehard fans who enjoy traveling to watch a rival game live. In this case, “traveling” is more figurative than literal; for some diehard fans, seeing their favorite team play away may involve taking a plane ride. And one airline recently announced it’s expanding its routes to accommodate these travelers.

As Zach Griff of The Points Guy reports, United Airlines recently announced plans to make it easier for college football fans to get to major games, including increasing capacity on some routes and adding a number of new flights for the season. They’re not alone in this; Griff points out that both Delta and Southwest have taken similar steps to make traveling around the country during football season much easier.

For United, these flights are scheduled to coincide with games like USC vs. Michigan (on Sept. 6), Tennessee vs. Arkansas (on Oct. 4), and Notre Dame vs. Navy (on Oct. 25). Some of the routes are relatively unique; you probably won’t find many direct flights from Columbus, Ohio to Eugene, Oregon — but this route is scheduled to coincide with the Ohio State vs. Oregon game on Oct. 11.

DOT and CFPB put airlines’ frequent flyer programs in the spotlight

College football fans aren’t the only football fans United is trying to appeal to with its schedule updates. Earlier this month, United announced changes and improvements to its schedule to make it easier for Chicago Bears fans to watch their favorite team while traveling. That doesn’t just apply to domestic travel: United is also adding a flight to London when the Bears play at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in October.
