Bargain hunting expert has to take back his words as couple makes huge profit

Bargain Hunt’s Charlie Ross was pleasantly surprised when a duo scored an unexpected win on the show. The episode, which aired on Thursday, saw red team contestants John and Charlie compete against blue team contestants Joseph and Rachel in the Northamptonshire town of Barckley.

The teams were each allocated £300 to invest in items they would later auction off to make a profit. The Reds were guided by antiques guru Thomas Forrester, while the Blues were under the care of expert Stephanie Connell.

At the beginning of the show, Charlie asked which member of the blue team would take the lead, to which Joseph replied, “I think when it comes to haggling with someone or making a deal, it’s Rachel.” Rachel acknowledged that they have limited experience with antiques, but emphasized their competitive spirit, saying, “It’s minimal, but we’re competitive.”

The red team initiated the process and ended up making a modest profit of £37. They were able to sell their first acquisition, a quirky banknote holder, for the same price they paid: £90, the Express reported, the Mirror reported.

Their next item, a footstool bought for £35, went for £50 at auction. They also benefitted from a ceramic plate they bought for £8 and sold for £25, and their wildcard item made £90. The Red Team followed with a strong performance, selling their opening piece, a Lalique fish, which cost £60, for £90.

However, the pair’s next offer, a pair of Chinese cloisonne vases, left expert Charlie doubting their profitability. With an opening bid of just £40, his scepticism seemed justified. Charlie’s surprise was palpable as the bids began to rise, and he admitted, “Well, I was wrong.” The duo eventually pocketed a tidy sum of £170.

The couple’s final hidden gem, a West German ceramic vase they snapped up for just £17, proved to be a godsend, earning them a Golden Hammer for three consecutive wins. In an unforeseen turn of events, Stephanie’s shrewd purchase, a £30 carriage foot warmer, fetched £55 at auction, taking the Reds’ total winnings to a whopping £73.
