Obituary for John England (2024) – Bishop, CA

John R. (Jack) England, 88, of Bishop, CA, died July 12, 2024 in Reno, NV. Jack was born September 2, 1935 in Baltimore, MD, to the late John E. and Ruth Hines England of Baltimore, MD. He lived with his family in Lower Burrell from 1977 to 2009 and in Bishop, CA in 2009. He previously lived in Washington, DC, Maryland, Texas and Massachusetts. Jack was formerly a member of St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church, Lower Burrell, and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Bishop, CA. Jack attended Anacostia High School in Washington, DC and earned a bachelor’s degree from American University and a master’s degree in hospital administration from George Washington University. He spent ten years in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of captain, serving at several Air Force Bases across the United States and spending a year at Sondrestrom Air Force Base in Greenland. He held the position of assistant administrator at Cafritz Memorial Hospital and Washington Hospital Center, both in Washington, D.C. In 1978, he became administrator and CEO of Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights, a position he held from 1978 until his retirement in 1995. He was a beloved leader at the hospital, and his staff loved him as much as he loved them. Jack was involved in many church and community activities, including local Rotary clubs, youth sports, Penn State Advisory Boards, and community projects. He was a lifelong community service and volunteer. Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years, Carol (Holden) England of Lower Burrell. He is survived by Susie Goss of Bishop, CA; his four sons, William L. (Lorie Slass) England of Elkins Park, John W. England of Freeport, Andrew J. England of Columbia, MD, and Thomas H. England of Springdale; his granddaughter Sarah E. England of New York City; and Susie’s son Larry Goss (Kathy) of Minden, NV. He was a wonderful father and community member and we will miss him greatly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted by Father Joel of St. Margaret Mary Church at St. Mary Cemetery, Lower Burrell, in the chapel on Monday, August 26, at 11 a.m., followed by a luncheon in Jack’s honor at The China Lobster in Lower Burrell at noon.
