Sulphur resident celebrates birthday in a special way

SULPHUR, Louisiana (KPLC) – A Sulphur resident is going above and beyond the call of duty to help furry animals in need of immediate attention.

Dana Frye is celebrating her 80th birthday in a helpful way. Frye is the founder and director of LaPaw Animal Rescue in Lake Charles.

Her only wish is to raise funds for one of the many pets she cares for and to raise awareness about animal cruelty.

“There are just some mean people out there who don’t care and don’t know what to do. Just like Newman, they just dumped him and hoped someone else would take care of the problem,” Frye said.

Newman, an eight-year-old Labrador, has been suffering from hip dysplasia for several years. On July 4, a neighbor saw Newman crying under the porch. When the neighbor realized he couldn’t walk, he contacted Frye.

Frye immediately took Newman to the vet, where she was told the surgery would cost about $2,000.

Frye hopes this will raise awareness about the importance of adoption and animal cruelty.

“Adopt one of us, don’t adopt one from the people on the streets. So please adopt an animal from a shelter or from the animal rescue organization, they have wonderful animals there,” Frye said.

Dustin Johnson, one of Frye’s many volunteers, stresses that immediate action is needed to help these sweet animals.

“We have to shuttle animals back and forth to get them spayed and neutered, and most of those are cats. That means a trip to Lafeyette and back, and Miss Dana does that sometimes three times a week if we have some sort of trap-neuter-release program for cats here, but we could do a little more than that and it can make a lot of difference in the community,” Johnson said.

The lack of resources like sterilization centers in southwest Louisiana is a major problem that Frye and Johnson hope will be addressed in the future.
