The early evening rain showers will ease and make way for a hot and mostly dry weekend

DEEP EAST TEXAS (KTRE) – Some weak disturbances spreading around the heat dome combined with daytime warming and a stalled frontal boundary to produce some isolated showers and thunderstorms in the Piney Woods today.

Any rain showers will dry up quickly tonight as the daytime heat dissipates and the sun sets before 8 p.m. Our regional high school football scrimmages should be in top shape tonight as the radar will be dry by the time scrimmages begin.

It will be a hot, humid and mostly dry weekend as the heat ridge continues to have a hold on our weather. With no significant disruptions coming our way, we will experience mostly sunny skies with highs above 35 degrees and heat index values likely around 40 degrees.

However, there are signs that the notorious heat dome could collapse and shift northward next week, opening the door for daily showers as disturbances rotate around its southern edge, tapping moisture from the Gulf and providing some lift in the atmosphere, finally increasing the chance of rain again.

We’ll move into a 20% chance of isolated showers through Sunday before increasing to a 30% chance of isolated downpours each day next week as moisture levels look to increase. Daily downpours would be nice as soil moisture levels begin to drop, as many areas of deep East Texas have had no precipitation so far this month.

The daily rains that will resume over the next few weeks are likely to limit our daily maximum temperatures to over 35 degrees under partly cloudy skies.
