Switch 2 doesn’t have to come out anytime soon, says Tomb Raider publisher

Amazon Games boss Christoph Hartmann has said that his company will “of course” develop games for the Switch 2, but he isn’t too worried about the new system’s release timing. Amazon Games is publishing Crystal Dynamics’ next Tomb Raider game and is also producing a new Lord of the Rings MMO, among other upcoming games.

Hartmann told IGN: “We are obviously planning to develop games for it and I can’t wait for it to come out.” At the same time, the manager said he would rather Nintendo “wait a year and get it perfect” than ship the system as quickly as possible “and then we all complain about what doesn’t work.”

“Switch is such a fantastic product, I can wait another year if I have to. And in terms of development, I think most non-Nintendo developers aren’t making Switch titles exclusively. They’re always part of a portfolio mix of platform mix. Just wait and see,” he said.

Nintendo will announce its successor, the Switch, before April 1, 2025. For context, Nintendo first confirmed the production of a new console – then called the NX – in March 2015 before launching it two years later.

The Switch is approaching the PS2’s all-time record of 155 million consoles sold. It is the best-selling console on the market, surpassing the sales of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The Switch 2, or whatever the system ends up being called, could help the video game industry rebound in 2025, and the release of GTA VI in 2025 should also be a big step in turning things around.

Hartmann, a former executive at 2K Games, also recently spoke about the role of artificial intelligence in game development. He said Amazon Games is not too concerned about the ongoing actors’ strike because “we don’t actually have actors…”

Amazon Games recently announced a new game during Gamescom: King of Meat.
