With school starting up again for some students in Eastern Iowa, as many of you know, that means there will be plenty of back to school photos.

Here are some classic photos from our staff at Iowa’s News Now.

While it’s fun to take back-to-school photos, parents should be careful about what photos they share online.

The Child Rescue Coalition offers four tips for safe back-to-school photos:

  1. Do not share the name of your child’s SCHOOL. All schools now have websites with addresses. A simple Google search is all it takes to find your child’s school. And if you do share the information, just make sure your settings are set to private so only friends and family can see this personal information.
  2. Do not disclose the TEACHER’s name. Staff and employees are listed in most school directories, making your child easy to find. Try not to publicly disclose too many details about what school your child attends.
  3. Don’t share your FAVORITES. If your child is contacted online, the perpetrator may use their “favorites” to gain their trust or pretend to be family friends. One of our investigators explains how perpetrators manipulate children here.
  4. Be sure to hide any school or location logos. These can be easily blurred on today’s smartphones. Always check your background to make sure you don’t accidentally photograph location identifiers, logos, or other children who may not be allowed to be posted online.
