Confessors doesn’t offer strict classes to choose from, but the range of builds is diverse – and according to Obsidian Entertainment, there’s one build that shines brighter than most.
As a committed Dragon Age I’m a fan of dark fantasy and a huge fan of blood mages, so it’s exciting to learn that I can actually play as one in Avowed. In an interview with Gamertag Radio, production director Ryan Warden reveals that the “high risk, high reward” build is one of his favorites – and that the developers discovered it by accident. “My favorite build… is a Blood Mage build.”
Warden goes on to explain the build in detail: “It’s like this: you’re a mage and you cast spells, but when you run out of essence, you start using up your own health to keep casting spells.” But how did the build come about? “We don’t have any real builds, it’s a classless game… QA gave us a lot of help on how to build (Gamescom demo setups). And one of our QA testers, Jan, was like, ‘I have a blood mage build.'”

That was when Obsidian first realized the build could be implemented in Avowed. “We were like, ‘What?’ And it was this combination of trinkets and rings and abilities, and it’s so much fun.” So much fun that Warden even proclaims that a Blood Mage build is “absolutely the best way to play that I’ve found so far.” To me, it sounds like Avowed is shaping up to be one of the best RPGs for quite some time – but that’s not too surprising.
Obsidian is the mastermind studio behind popular games like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity, and more recently The Outer Worlds and its upcoming sequel. The Outer Worlds 2. Personally, I can’t wait to dive into Avowed and explore for myself how a Blood Mage build works – will it take me back to the old days of gaming? BioWares Dragon Age classic Origins? I hope so.
