If you’re interested in midcentury design, you’re familiar with the work of Alexander Girard. Although he trained as an architect, the titan of postwar design is celebrated for his vibrant textiles and cheery interiors. Design fans are in luck: You can now live in the legend’s former Santa Fe home for $3 million.
It’s a price that befits the home’s design pedigree: 415 Camino Delora (listed by TC Warner and Rebecca Holland of Sotheby’s International Realty) was a hangout for equally famous visitors (and creative collaborators), including Charles and Ray Eames and Georgia O’Keeffe. Girard lived and worked there for 40 years, from the time he moved to Santa Fe with his wife, Susan, until his death in 1993. According to the Santa Fe Reporter“Girard treated the living spaces of the house as a rotating gallery, design laboratory and social experiment.”
Although 415 Camino Delora has been renovated since Girard’s time, potential buyers can still see why he liked the house so much: From its abundance of nichols from the ceiling covered with Girard textile to the open floor plans, all In this New Mexico light, this is the kind of place whose positive energy and almost monastic atmosphere can be felt as soon as you enter – and which makes you fall in love at first sight.
There are five bedrooms in total here, with two master suites on each floor of the house. For those who want to harness the creative powers that are no doubt still in the air, there is also a studio with a balcony – ideal for spending many hours sketching the next “Eyes” print. Should you be inspired to prepare a meal, the kitchen (where O’Keeffe, according to the Santa Fe Reporter) offers you all the amenities you need with two Sub-Zero refrigerators, a Lacanche six-burner stove, a Miele oven/microwave combination, and much more.

It would be easy to spend all your time at 415 Camino Delora indoors, amidst the colorfully patterned carpets, lush folk art, skylights, shallow fireplaces (more than four of them!), and wood-paneled walls. However, you would be remiss if you didn’t take advantage of what the backyard has to offer: its manicured desert garden, L-shaped Banksand a hot tub are just some of the options that will delight your senses.
“Everything can be used to create beauty if you handle it properly,” Girard once said – and this house could Only the right thing for you.
