Green Bay Police Remind Parents to Talk to Their Children About Gel and Water Bead Toy Guns

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Green Bay Police are reminding parents to talk to their children about the safe and proper use of water bead and gel guns after several incidents involving them.

The Green Bay Police Department published graphics in a Facebook post detailing what types of toy guns they are and what can happen if they are misused.

They remind parents that children should always be supervised when using toy guns and that toy guns should not be aimed at faces. In addition, any property damage caused by them or by use in inappropriate environments can be a criminal offence.

Improper use of these toy guns can fall under disorderly conduct and assault laws, and there is a state law that restricts the use of replica firearms. It states that they cannot be carried or displayed in a manner that could reasonably intimidate, alarm, threaten, or cause fear or terror to anyone.

The police also advise parents that the water beads used in the toy guns can pose a choking hazard, especially for small children.

Police Chief Chris Davis also addressed toy gun safety and awareness in a July video.

“We’re seeing an alarming increase in the number of gel blaster incidents,” Davis said. “It’s happening all over the state. We recently had an incident here in Green Bay where random people were attacked by someone in a car with a gel blaster gun.”
