“The Killer” has returned.

John Woo’s 1989 action film, which made the filmmaker one of the most exciting chaos orchestrators in film history, has been remade by Woo himself. This time, the titular assassin is played by Nathalie Emmanuel (“Game of Thrones,” “Fast & Furious 7”), while the dogged police officer is now played by Omar Sy (“Lupin,” “Intouchables”).

“The Killer” will air exclusively on Peacock, Universal’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform.

What is “The Killer” about?

In The Killer, Emmanuel plays a contract killer nicknamed Zee. She works for a mysterious agent named Finn, who sends her on a mission that results in the blinding of a young American lounge singer. (The film is set in Paris.) Together, the two women form an unlikely duo as they flee from Zee’s employers, some mysterious international gangsters, a dogged cop (played by Sy), and others. It’s a wild ride!

Yes, there was a movie called The Killer that came out late last year. The film, directed by David Fincher, is based on a French comic book and stars Michael Fassbender as a hitman who screws up a job and then goes on an international quest for revenge. The film is very good. It’s on Netflix.

Who is in “The Killer”?

In addition to Emmanuel and Sy, The Killer stars Sam Worthington as Zee’s handler Finn; Diana Silvers plays Jenn, the lounge singer who goes blind during Zee’s murder; and Saïd Taghmaoui is a Middle Eastern prince caught up in a complicated criminal deal. The cast is quite good, complemented by top-notch stunt performers and some local French actors.

How can you watch Woo’s original film?

There is currently no legal way to stream The Killer. You can’t even buy a DVD or Blu-ray of John Woo’s classic. That has to do with a complicated rights issue. It’s a real shame. (Film journalist Katie Rife called it an “international cinema emergency,” which is very accurate.) The film used to be available in print and even had a Criterion release at one point, so browse the internet long enough and you’ll probably find a copy of his 1989 masterpiece. Don’t give up. Just keep browsing.
