Opus: Prism Peak is an upcoming Japanese narrative adventure game where you shoot photos of ghosts to make your way through an unknown, ghostly world, and I think it might solve all my life problems.
OK, realistically, Opus: Prism Peak isn’t going to make sure I have enough money in retirement, nor cure my chronic migraines, but it certainly looks like it will make living with these situations a lot more bearable. The first thing I noticed is that it looks like the most beautiful anime I’ve ever seen, with gorgeous lighting effects, colors, and depictions of nature and human emotions. I mean, just look at this thing:
Capture the moment and then learn to let go.SIGONO x SHUEISHA GAMES OPUS: Prism Peak is a narrative adventure where your choices lead to different endings. Play as a photographer lost in an ethereal realm and use your camera to uncover its secrets to find a way home.#PrismPeak20 August 2024
Narratively, I just know this film is going to pack a big emotional punch, and frankly, I’m ready to learn some hard lessons. It’s about a photojournalist who has gotten into a bad situation due to many failures in life and stumbles into an ethereal world on his way back to his hometown. In this spirit world, he meets a mysterious girl who wants to help him find the way home, which she can only reach via a faraway cabin. “Where do adults go when they’re lost?” is the tagline of the trailer.
The gameplay seems to take its cues from camera-based games like Pokemon Snap or, perhaps more appropriately, Fatal Frame. You don’t just have a camera and can take pictures; photography is the heart of the game. “The photography in OPUS: Prism Peak reflects how deeply the protagonist perceives the world,” says Taiwan-based developer Sigono Inc. “To get the best shots, players must understand the true desires of each ghost and capture the landscape at the heart of their subject.”
Prism Peak is actually the fourth entry in the acclaimed Opus series of visual novels, though it feels more like a traditional, narrative-driven adventure game. There’s no release date yet, but when I know more, you know more.
