DNC party in Mankato West with cheers for Governor Walz

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) – Mankato West High School hosted a watch party for Governor Tim Walz’s speech at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night.

The event was held in the school’s auditorium and was attended by local Democratic Party supporters, representatives of the Harris-Walz campaign, local government officials, and several of Walz’s friends and former students.

A live stream of the Democratic National Convention ran for over three hours in the auditorium, and between speeches, several speakers appeared to promote the Harris-Walz campaign.

A prominent speaker was Rachel Bohman, who is currently running for Congressional District 1 – Mankato’s district – as well as the district Walz recaptured in 2006. Bohman is running against Republican Congressman Brad Finstad, who she says has failed to listen to his constituents.

“I’m running against incumbent Brad Finstad, a conservative Republican who ran on a moderate platform but was inaccessible to the people of this district and really voted for the extreme right.”

One of the main points of the evening was the fact that Governor Walz was both a teacher and coach at Mankato West. His fellow teachers confirmed that the “Big Dad” persona Walz portrays on stage is the real Walz.

“The real Walz is Governor Walz, Vice Presidential candidate Walz, the Tim I knew as a teacher is exactly how we see him on the campaign trail. He brings this tremendous energy to everything he does, and I find it really exciting to see that infectious enthusiasm.”

The party lasted until just after 10:30 a.m., when Governor Walz gave his acceptance speech.
