COLD SPRING (WJON News) – Red Truck Ice Cream in Cold Spring has transformed a long-vacant historic building in Cold Spring into a thriving business. Julie and Bob Sabo opened the store a little over a year ago at 113 Main Street.

The building was originally built in 1893 and was a hardware and furniture store. The store had several owners who operated it as a hardware store until 2005, but it has been vacant since then. Julie Sabo says they loved the location and thought they would take a chance:

“Since it’s such a great location and the water play area is right across the street, we thought we’d just contact the former building owners and ask if there was any possibility of leasing or purchasing the building.”

She says they found the original wall behind a pegboard and after hundreds of hours were able to incorporate it into the store. They also found some handwritten draft dates from World War II on one wall and hung them in a frame to capture the history.

Sabo says the support from the town has been great. She says they started with 6 flavors of ice cream, increased to 14 after about a month, and are now at almost 30. Sabo says townspeople already have their favorites:

“I can name two of them without even looking at the menu, the Monster Mixer and then the Oreo Cookie Jar, which have probably been by far the most popular over the last two seasons.”

Sabo says they also make their own ice cream sandwiches, offer malt beverages, shakes and soft serve mixers, and that they hope to add a mobile truck or trailer next year so the real Red Truck can show up at events in the area.

She says it can be challenging for her and her husband to balance their full-time jobs with the ice cream shop, but they wouldn’t have it any other way.
