For a small community on the shores of Quartermaster Harbor, Dockton boasts an unusual number of artists. Recently, people working in a variety of media came together to form Dockton Artists, a very local collective, and subsequently decided to organize a public art walk over Labor Day weekend.

Gale Lurie of Dockton Pottery explained: “We’ve been saying for some time that there are so many artists working here that we really should do something. The Art Walk is the result.”

On Saturday and Sunday, August 31 and September 1, a total of 15 artists will exhibit their works in seven studios. The impressive concentration of talent in such a small space is also reflected in the fact that all studios are only a few minutes’ walk from each other.

Studios will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Lurie noted that “on Saturday, the famous Aeggy’s food truck will be available, so bring your appetite.”

A wide range of art is on display, including paintings (oil, pastel, acrylic and watercolour), drawings and prints, jewellery, neon art, photography, pottery and stained glass, as well as felted clothing, shoes and hats. Some of the artists in the group, including Lurie, have worked in Dockton for many years; others, such as Alleson Buchanan – a neon artist – are new to the area.

Lurie suggests that visitors to the art walk take the opportunity to explore the area beyond the studios. “While you’re here, walk the historic Dockton Trail,” she recommends. “Visit the playground and the beach at the marina. Or take a walk through the beautiful Dockton Forest. Make a whole day of it.”
