Yamal Yidios on the art of balancing form, function and innovation for superior design

The Residences at 1428 Brickell is a prime example of Yamal Yidios’ innovative vision. As the driving force behind Ytech, Yidios combines a deep respect for tradition with cutting-edge design principles. In a recent conversation, he shared insights into his design philosophy and revealed how he achieves a harmonious balance between form, function and innovation.

Q: How do you balance Ytech’s contemporary innovation with historical influences at The Residences at 1428 Brickell?

A design should reflect the essence of its time and place. By honoring the history and context of a site, we create work that feels both relevant and timeless. Our approach combines contemporary innovation with respect for historical influences. We took the classic curve and arch and combined them with a modern treatment of travertine to create something that feels timeless and solid, yet fresh and serene. This balance allows us to create designs that harmonize with their surroundings while pushing the boundaries of creativity. 1428 Brickell’s design is also known for its discreet street-level presence, created by the lush botanical garden in front of the building, providing privacy for ground-floor residents and a sense of serenity for passersby. This is a great example of our work that is both forward-thinking and deeply rooted in its context.

Q: How do you integrate function and form in The Residences at 1428 Brickell?

Our aim is to balance form and function in every project and this is closely linked to our design philosophy. We believe that a space should be visually appealing and effectively serve its intended purpose, but this is more complex than it sounds as excellent execution of one can result in compromises on the other. For this reason, we go through numerous iterations to refine and improve the concept. This considerable time we dedicate to design and development makes our work exceptional and ensures that every design element contributes to both aesthetics and functionality. For example, interior designs are designed through extensive solar studies that focus on light, livability and views all year round. Floor plans are perfectly balanced between day and night areas. The organization and circulation of the apartments are optimized to achieve a balance that is both aesthetically pleasing and functionally superior. The result is an understated elegance and a safe living experience that is a direct result of the thorough thought and planning that went into the project. By achieving this balance, we create environments that are both beautiful and practical.

Q: How are you incorporating innovation into The Residences at 1428 Brickell?

Innovation is a driving force in our architectural approach while remaining true to our core principles. We are constantly exploring new ideas and techniques to not only push the boundaries of design but, more importantly, enhance the human experience. For example, The Residences at 1428 Brickell is the world’s first residential tower to be partially powered by solar energy, significantly reducing the burden on local power generation and reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 4,700 tons per year, while making the building one of the most efficient in the region. By embracing innovation, we create designs that are both forward-looking and timeless. Another example is 1428 Brickell’s classic stance, which conceals our innovative approach to organizing the building. We moved the core to the west side to ensure every apartment faces east and eliminated apartments that would normally be confined to poorer views to the west. This also allowed for the creation of expansive terraces and an open floor plan with floor-to-ceiling windows that allow the sun to flood a home’s common areas with natural light throughout the day. We strive to be leaders in creativity and architectural excellence.

Q: What sets Ytech’s approach to design and craftsmanship apart in The Residences at 1428 Brickell?

At Ytech, we are consistently focused on providing our clients with world-class designs, unmatched craftsmanship and meaningful innovations. Therefore, our projects are designed and created to be the best in their class. They are private living spaces where nothing is superfluous and everything is chosen for a reason – all for a very discerning, confident clientele.

Q: How has Ytech’s approach contributed to the success of The Residences at 1428 Brickell?

The success we’ve experienced at 1428 Brickell proves that our approach resonates with a discerning global audience. We invest in what really matters – superior design, exceptional craftsmanship using only the highest quality materials, and meaningful innovation. For us, that’s the essence of luxury. Every inch of the space has been considered, everything has been weighed and judged to an incredibly high standard, and the end result is absolutely worth it.

Q: What role does attention to detail play in your process?

Attention to detail is essential to exceptional design, so we focus on the finer aspects of a project to ensure excellence and make sure the overall vision is precisely executed. Small details contribute greatly to the overall success of a design, adding depth and sophistication. Our meticulous approach to craftsmanship and execution not only brings the project to life, but more importantly, enhances the quality of our work. Every stone, metal, wood, fabric, colour and finish is carefully selected by us – we do not tolerate imperfection or a low standard. It is simply how we work, because true excellence is achieved by carefully considering every detail.
