It’s time for the Chiefs to take their losses and stop with the first-round pick

The Kansas City Chiefs don’t get enough credit for their good draft picks over the last decade. It’s easy to give Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Andy Reid the lion’s share of the credit, but Brett Veach and the front office have consistently done well with their draft picks over the past few years.

George Karlaftis, Trent McDuffie, L’Jarius Sneed, Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith – the list goes on.

And while the Chiefs have consistently hit the jackpot in the draft, every team has its ups and downs in April, and for Kansas City, it’s time to cut ties with a first-round pick that just hasn’t paid off.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire was selected as the last pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft and was expected to add a whole new element to Kansas City’s dynamic offense. After a solid rookie season in which the LSU product rushed for over 800 yards, he has only had 71 and 70 carries in the last two years, respectively, and is clearly being overtaken by other backs on the Chiefs’ roster.

Deneric Prince had a very good preseason, as did Carson Steele – both deserve a spot on the roster behind Isiah Pacheco.

This was one of the Chiefs’ rare misses, but the good news is that they have two more running backs who are ready and deserve bigger roles.
