Old Globe extends the Christmas season with “Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story, Told by Jefferson Mays”

The Old Globe has announced that it has added the one-man show A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens: A Ghost Story Told by Jefferson Mays to the calendar 2024.

The timeless story of Ebenezer Scrooge is brought to life by Tony Award winner Jefferson Mays (Broadway’s I am my own woman and the Old Globe’s A gentleman’s guide to love and murder), under the direction of Barry Edelstein, the Globe’s artistic director.

The engagement, consisting of only 10 performances, from December 12 to 22, will take place at the Sheryl and Harvey White Theater, part of the Prebys Theater Center in Balboa Park.

Presales for subscribers and donors begin at noon on September 6, with individual tickets for the general public going on sale at noon on September 18. Purchases can be made online or by phone at (619) 23-GLOBE (234-5623).

Mays returns to the Old Globe after his appearance in A gentleman’s guide to love and murderwhich won a San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Award in 2013.

In Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story, Mays portrays over 50 characters, from Scrooge and Marley to Tiny Tim and the Three Ghosts.

“It is a great joy to share with San Diego a show that I know will be a special holiday gift and an unforgettable evening at the theater,” said Edelstein.

Of Mays, he added that the play “showcases the versatility, range and unique talent of one of America’s finest actors.”

Mays recently appeared in the revival of The Music Man as Mayor Shinn alongside Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster, while also playing his Tony-nominated A Christmas storyMichael Arden directed the film in the same season. A Christmas story was also performed in Los Angeles.

In addition to his Tony win in 2004 for I am my own womanMays was nominated in 2017 for his role in Oslo and in 2014 for the musical A gentleman’s guide to love and murder.

On television, Mays can be seen as arrogant talk show host Albert Duhamel in HBO Max’s “Julia.” He also plays dyspeptic antique shop owner TL Gurley in “Hacks,” currently streaming on HBO Max. Mays’ other television credits include recurring roles on FX’s “The Americans,” Cinemax’s “The Knick” and NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU.”
