15 outstanding photos from the second night of the DNC

Day 2 of the Democratic National Convention: Electric Boogaloo. Literally. The second night of the convention was just as loud and upbeat as the first, but this time there was music – so much music – as well as great speeches from some of the biggest names in Democratic politics. Bernie Sanders, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama – ever heard of them?

Here are 15 images that capture the spirit of the night.

In stark contrast to the boring roll call at the Republican National Convention, the DNC’s ceremonial vote was livened up by excellent needle drops from DJ Cassidy (pictured above).

(If you want to refresh your grasp of the RNC roll call process, here it is.)

A delegate from Iowa produced a giant corn cob prop.
California’s delegation, including Governor Gavin Newsom and Representatives Maxine Waters and Nancy Pelosi, cast their votes on Kendrick Lamar’s smash hit “Not Like Us,” in which he disses Drake.
What do you think they will do with all the head cutouts when the DNC is over?
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham focused her speech on health care and shared powerful personal stories, including Harris’ death of her mother from colon cancer.
In his speech, Senator Bernie Sanders highlighted policy priorities that he said Harris would like to take on, such as Medicare for All.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker may have looked like a 1920s mafia boss, but Trump summed up Trump’s point when he said, “The Democrats want above all else an economic policy that is kind, not cruel. But Trump chooses cruelty every time.”
Angela Alsobrooks, the Democratic Senate candidate in Maryland, used her prime-time speaking appearance to talk about her 14-year friendship with Harris, whom Alsobrooks called a “friend, mentor and role model.”
Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth, a war veteran who lost both legs in Iraq, attacked Donald Trump over reproductive rights. “Trump’s misogynistic crusade has threatened the right of other Americans to have their own families,” she said. “Because if they win, Republicans will not stop at banning abortion. Next they will tackle in vitro fertilization. They will prosecute doctors. They will pillory women and spy on them.”
Harris’ enthusiasm for the grassroots movement is truly remarkable.
Harris’ husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, used his emotional speech to share personal stories about his wife, calling her a “joyful warrior.”
Doug.
Michelle Obama rebuked Donald Trump for one of his most infamous campaign slogans when she asked the audience, “Who’s going to tell him that the job he’s looking for might be one of those ‘black jobs’?”
Barack Obama brought his magic of hope and change to the Chicago stage, saying, “We want better. We want to be better. And the joy and excitement we’re experiencing in this campaign tells us we’re not alone.”
Try to imagine Trump and Melania doing that. You can’t.
