Appalachian Fair Food welcomes Appy’s Kitchen, Bayou Boys and a watermelon eating contest

The Appalachian Fair is not complete without delicious food.

There are so many options to choose from.

Appy’s Kitchen is a little bit salty and a little bit sweet, from pork tenderloin sandwiches to delicious desserts.

One of the show directors, Stephanie Roark, tells me that Appy Delight and the Dr. Enuf Float are two of my favorites.

This year is Appy Kitchen’s fifth year at the fair and it’s about much more than just food.

Our food court here at the fairgrounds is one of the few where 100% of the proceeds actually go back to the community. We even use our money to provide youth scholarships, so the money comes from our kitchen into our community, said Stephanie Roark.

If you are looking for New Orleans originals, you can go to Bayou Boys.

I was told this was their first appearance at the Appalachian Fair.

Well, our limited menu is what we have in our restaurant. We have boudin balls, swamp fries, different kinds of po-boys, gumbo, red beans and rice and jambalaya,” said Bayou Boys executive chef Walter Holmes.

If you’re in the mood for some friendly competition and a sweet treat, the Food City Watermelon Eating Contest is a great refresher.

“My friend Laylin is a big eater and I wanted to show that I could eat more watermelon than him,” said the winner of the watermelon eating contest round, Rider Poston.

Oh, he showed him by winning his two-minute no-hands round.

There are three more opportunities to participate in the watermelon eating contest this week, all taking place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings at 6:45 p.m.
