John Murphy joins the race for the vacant position on the FC Council

John B. Murphy, Falls Church resident and former chair of the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals, announced today that he will run for the Falls Church City Council seat left vacant last week by the resignation of Caroline Lian. The announcement comes one day after former Falls Church School Board Chair Laura Downs announced her candidacy.

The following is a statement from Murphy:

Statement by John B. Murphy

I am proud to announce my candidacy for the vacant position on the Falls Church City Council. Although the timeline to get on the ballot on November 5 is very tight, I jumped in full steam ahead. I know running for City Council will be challenging, but it is worth it.

I was born on Marshall Street, spent my childhood in the Mary Riley Styles Library where my mother worked for 43 years, and my wife and I watched our two sons thrive in Falls Church City schools. I know Falls Church City. I love it here, and I’ve chosen to stay here to continue giving back to our community.

To date, I have served on the Board of Zoning Appeals for six years, including two terms as Chair, and as a member and Chair of the Zoning Ordinance Advisory Committee. For the past 15 years, I have volunteered and served as both a Board Member and Officer of the Village Preservation and Improvement Society (VPIS). In my spare time, I have coached our youth as an Eagle Coach and volunteered for several organizations in Falls Church City, from being the caretaker of the Scout House on Spring Street to delivering mulch for the Athletic Boosters. When it comes to my community, I am fully committed and ready to help.

I want to thank my early supporters for their help in gathering signatures. I look forward to speaking with Falls Church City residents, listening to their concerns and issues, and working with city staff and elected officials. We live in a wonderful place. With sustainable development, open and responsive government, and citizen input, we can continue to grow Falls Church together. We can do even better in the future. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or want to show your support.
