On Monday, there were clashes between protesters and police for the second day in a row outside the Democratic Party Convention in Chicago, resulting in 13 arrests, according to police.
The charges against those arrested ranged from trespassing to resisting arrest, obstruction of justice and aggravated assault against police officers, Chicago Police Commissioner Larry Snelling said at a press conference.
Some of those arrested breached a fence near the United Center on Monday night, Snelling said. Police officers responding to the breach were struck by objects and sprayed with pepper spray, he said, but added that there were “no major injuries.”
“Our officers showed great restraint,” Snelling said.
On Sunday, two people were arrested ahead of the four-day congress.
There are expected to be demonstrations every day and crowds will be even larger than those seen during the protests outside the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last month.
Most of the demonstrators are protesting the war in Gaza. Organizers expect up to 20,000 participants. Other activist groups outside the DNC are demonstrating to protect abortion and LGBTQ rights, calling for racial equality, and raising awareness about climate change.
