The story of Conor McGregor’s UFC return is being ‘mistold’

The road to Conor McGregor’s return to the Octagon was unlike anything the UFC had ever experienced before.

There has been regular talk about his comeback in recent years, but the blame has been placed on both McGregor and the UFC.

Although his professionalism has been questioned since his last fight, “The Notorious” has always been passionate about martial arts and competition despite everything he has already accomplished.

His return in 2024 appears to be off the table after Dana White recently seemed to destroy any chance the Irishman had of headlining the final numbered event of the year in December.

Chael Sonnen says he believes Conor McGregor and believes he is pushing hard for the return

From the outside, it seems like McGregor has been trying very hard over the last 12 months or so to secure his comeback after repeatedly declaring he was ready to fight.

Although the decision to pull out of the UFC 303 main event against Michael Chandler was his, the former UFC champion seemed determined to postpone the fight until later in the year.

Chael Sonnen said on a recent episode of Good Guy/Bad Guy on ESPN MMA that he trusts McGregor to make this fight happen.

“The Bad Guy” said he doesn’t believe the impression of what is happening behind the scenes reflects reality, explaining his belief that “The Mac” is doing everything he can to make this fight a reality.

“I heard the organization wants him to fight in California in January. I can’t confirm that, but I will say one thing, Daniel, as verbose as I am. I think Conor’s story is a little bit mistold that way. I believe him. I believe he wants to fight. I believe he’s operating behind the scenes. He loves to fake power, he loves to let people know that everything is my decision.

“I think he humbled himself and said, ‘I need the organization’s approval, I’m ready to join,’ but that’s not quite the story being told. The story is that Conor is holding out for this, but I don’t believe that, and if you remember all the effort he put in to get on the roster on June 29, he’s doing the same things to get on the roster in December. At least I think he’s serious and still wants to be one of the guys.”
