Chet Holmgren claims OKC Thunder guard deserves “a lot more” recognition

The Oklahoma City Thunder’s rise to contention has been loud and heard throughout the league. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been an MVP candidate for two consecutive seasons and is joined by two rising stars and a strong core of supporting cast.

With this loud addition, some players on the roster may get lost in the shuffle when it comes to receiving praise for their contributions to the club. Sixth-year guard Lu Dort happens to be that player for the Thunder.

X-user (formerly of Twitter) LegionHoops posted a provocative question, asking fans to name players who deserve more recognition. The post’s cover photo was Dort. Thunder rising center Chet Holmgren responded to the post, claiming Dort deserves “way more” recognition.

Now it’s easy to understand why Dort gets lost in the crowd. His best season came when the team’s rise began, but his role evened out as the team accumulated more talent. His averages dropped slightly, but his impact didn’t change much.

Defensively, where Dort makes his money, is where the Thunder have really improved. It’s a team effort, and Dort is supported by other defensive standouts like Cason Wallace and Holmgre, with Alex Caruso also joining the fold.

On both sides of the ball, it’s easy to see Dort’s game being overshadowed, however the cultural fit and effort he brings to the field is a great energy booster and his ability to hold his own in the field that he showed last season combined with his excellent defensive ability make him a key contributor on a team at a competitive level.

Again, overlooking Dort’s impact is one thing, ignoring it is another. He should no longer be ignored. He will be a starter on a team that is expected to win 50+ games and play deep into the playoffs while playing solid basketball on both ends of the court.

Holmgren is right – Dort deserves more recognition for his role in Oklahoma City. But given the Thunder’s star-studded lineup and depth, that’s not a guaranteed win for any player.
