Toccolana Club provides great help to its fellow citizens

Toccolana Club provides great help to its fellow citizens

One of the best things about living in Central New York is knowing that your neighbor is likely to help you in an emergency. This was never more evident than last month after the devastating tornado that devastated the city of Rome.

The EF-2 tornado touched down and tore through much of Rome. The storm packed winds of 135 mph, was 300 feet wide, and 5.2 miles long. It all happened in 10 minutes, but the effects are still being felt and recovery is far from complete.

Throughout all of this time, several organizations have stepped up to help those most in need. We have seen this local community donate their hard-earned money to purchase cases of water for those involved in the relief effort and for those who were without power and shelter. This community has also collaborated financially with donations to the Emergency Relief Fund at the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties Rome, NY.

Even during these hard times, people reached deep into their wallets to help those in need. The Toccolana Club of Rome is no exception. After the storm, the club held its annual World Series of Bocce tournament. Most hailed the tournament as a symbol of the city’s resilience, and the club raised money that will now be distributed for the good cause. The Community Foundation announced a donation of $14,130 to be added to the fund.

What an incredible gesture from another great local organization and another shining example of neighbors helping neighbors during CNY. This fund has been set up specifically to help:

  • Deductibles
  • Electrical connections
  • Securing houses
  • Moving costs
  • Moderate repairs
  • Tree felling
  • Garbage container rental

These are just some of the many needs that many Romans are still facing a month later, and funds are still available. The application deadline is Friday, August 23, 2024. If you need help or have questions about the application, you can call a special number. The switchboard is now open and you just need to dial 315-798-5206. You can still donate to the fund online.

Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts first frost for Central New York

Whether we like it or not, fall officially begins on September 22. Although there is still a long way to go before we feel the cool embrace of crisp fall weather, the Old Farmer’s Almanac has released its predictions for when Chinese New Year 2024 might see the first frost.

With a colder and snowier winter forecast, the ground may be covered in frost a little earlier than previously expected.
