The world’s tallest moose statue celebrated its 40th birthday on Friday with a party at the visitor center on Diefenbaker Drive.

Originally erected in 1984 by Don Foulds, Mac the Moose lost his crown as the world’s tallest moose statue to a statue in Norway, but reclaimed the title in 2019 with the installation of taller antlers.

Sydney Woodrow, summer event coordinator for Tourism Moose Jaw, spoke about Friday’s birthday party. “I couldn’t have asked for better weather and better people – it was just so much fun. A lot of nice people came, there were a lot of really great donations and we’re super happy.”

Funds raised at the event will be donated to the Moose Jaw Humane Society.

There were 20-minute Mac-themed trolley tours, axe throwing and garden games to join in, along with cake.

Many tourists came to celebrate Mac’s 40th birthday, including a couple from Chicago and a father and son from Vancouver.

“It’s really great that people from all over can get to know our city and our town and especially Mac the Moose,” said Woodrow.

On Friday there was a final opportunity to submit name suggestions for the new bison statue in the visitor center, which will now be discussed by the Public Art Committee.
