Long before he was the best football player in the world, Patrick Mahomes was just one in a long line of Texas Tech football Air Raid quarterbacks who put up impressive numbers in Lubbock. A lot has changed since then.

One thing hasn’t changed, however: Patrick Mahomes’ love for his alma mater. He made that clear recently when he donated a huge sum of money to the Red Raider football program for a new football facility for coach Joey McGuire and his colleagues.

Texas Tech Athletics announced Thursday that former student Patrick Mahomes II made the final donation of the historic Fearless Champions campaign when he and his wife, Brittany, donated $5 million toward the $242 million South End Zone and Dustin R. Womble Football Center project.

In recognition of the gift, Texas Tech will name the soon-to-be-completed walkway at the Womble Football Center after him. The three-time Super Bowl champion will also be honored as the namesake of Texas Tech’s quarterback meeting room and the offensive coordinator’s office in the new South End Zone Building at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Here’s a look at the new home.

Mahomes played at Texas Tech from 2014 to 2016. In 32 career games, he totaled 11,000 passing yards, 820 rushing yards, and 22 touchdown passes with 93 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. Those stats include a record-breaking performance against Oklahoma in 2016, when he threw for 734 yards in a 69-59 loss. Yeah, that’s pretty good.

We all know what’s happened since then. The two-time MVP has won three Super Bowls in his first six years as a starter for the Kansas City Chiefs and has a chance this year to become the first quarterback ever to win three Super Bowls in a row.

Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany are also co-owners of the Kansas City Current in the NWSL, which recently opened an impressive stadium specifically for women’s soccer in Kansas City.

After this donation, Texas Tech football players will be reminded of Mahomes’ impact on their program every time they enter the facility.
