Frontier offers cardholders free checked bags: What you need to know

In collaboration with Barclays US Consumer Bank, Frontier Airlines has introduced a new benefit for its frequent flyers: certain cardholders are allowed to take two free checked bags on flights with the ultra-low-cost airline.

Starting August 15, Frontier Airlines World Mastercard holders can take two checked bags on all Frontier-operated flights at no additional charge, giving the budget airline’s frequent flyers even more ways to save money on flights within the United States.

Change low-cost airlines

The latest policy is yet another change the ultra-low-cost carrier has made to reduce revenue losses and compete with larger airlines like United and Delta. The low-cost airline industry in North America is in financial trouble, with United CEO Scott Kirby even stating that the low-cost sector is in serious trouble.

As a result, Southwest, Spirit and Frontier now offer premium seating and other perks that budget airlines aren’t known for. Likewise, Spirit has eliminated flight change and cancellation fees for all ticket fares, following Frontier’s decision to eliminate change fees for most of its fare types.

Under the new baggage policy, there is no limit on how many times cardholders can use the free checked bag benefit, and it includes bulkier items like golf and ski equipment. To be eligible, airline tickets must be purchased through Frontier’s website or mobile app, and cardholders must use their Frontier Airlines World Mastercard when booking.

Cardholders already receive a number of exclusive benefits when they fly with Frontier, including miles that never expire (as long as card membership is maintained), no blackout dates for award travel, priority boarding in Zone 2 on Frontier flights and a $100 flight credit when you spend $2,500 annually.

Best for budget travel?

Other benefits include automatic Elite Gold status in the Frontier Miles loyalty program for 90 days after the first card purchase, which can be extended to one year by spending $3,000 or more within the first 90 days.

Thanks to these benefits, the Frontier Airlines World Mastercard has been named “Best for Budget Travelers” among airline credit cards by Money.com for the past four years.

“Our cardmembers have spoken and we have listened,” said Bobby Schroeter, Chief Commercial Officer at Frontier Airlines. “With the introduction of free checked baggage, we are enhancing the travel experience for FRONTIER Airlines World Mastercard cardmembers.

“This new benefit, combined with existing perks like instant Elite Gold status and miles that never expire, makes our card a must-have for any traveler looking to maximize value and convenience on every flight.”

Doug Villone, head of cards and partnerships at Barclays US Consumer Bank, said, “The introduction of free checked bags reflects Barclays and Frontier’s shared commitment to providing cardholders with valuable rewards and benefits that enhance their travel experience with the airline. We are proud to support Frontier and their mission to offer affordable travel across America and beyond.”
