John Legend says his eight-year-old daughter feels a special connection to Kamala Harris.
Luna, the Grammy-winning star and eldest child of Chrissy Teigen, is black and Asian like Harris. Legend has it that when Luna looks at the current US Vice President, she sees a part of herself.
“(Luna) is so excited to see someone black and Asian like her, (and) a woman like her – so she looks at (Kamala) like she’s thinking, ‘That’s me’ up there,” Legend says The Hollywood Reporter“It’s obviously very inspiring for her to see this and she’s excited. She can’t imagine why anyone would vote for Donald Trump, but that’s another topic.”
Legend will appear at a private event during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this week. The EGOT winner and Teigen’s family also includes sons Miles and Wren and daughter Esti. Legend says he has visited the White House and met Harris on several occasions. In June, Teigen hosted an event with Harris on reproductive rights.
Legend has supported Democratic candidates over the years and he is excited to see Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee.
“I think the change at the top of the electoral list was necessary to create the excitement that we have now. And you can just feel the rush of mobilization and engagement and volunteering and donations and the desire to go out and get other friends to vote. You just see this rush that wasn’t there before,” he explains.
“I think people were pretty apathetic about electing two 80-year-olds, and they were ready for some new energy and new excitement. And I’m really grateful to President Biden for making that sacrifice, because the default position for any president, especially someone who had as successful a first term as he did, is to run for re-election. And he understood that that wasn’t necessarily the best thing for the country, and he did something really graceful and patriotic by stepping down and allowing a new generation to step in. And I think that act inspired so many people, and it’s a beautiful thing. I love to see that.”
