China has issued new guidelines to accelerate efforts to green the transformation of industry, services and other social activities, so as to achieve the country’s set green, low-carbon development goals. By 2035, a thoroughly green, low-carbon and circular economy will largely take shape in China, with economic and social development fully following this path.

By 2035, a fully green, low-carbon circular economy will largely take shape in China and economic and social development will fully take a green and sustainable path, state-controlled media reported.

According to the guidelines, the scale of China’s energy saving and environmental protection industry will reach 15 trillion yuan ($2.1 trillion) by 2030. The goal is for non-fossil fuels to account for at least 25 percent of the country’s total energy mix by then.

The policy sets the tone for many aspects of China’s green development, including a commitment to green growth, a comprehensive restructuring of the country’s industrial system, the widespread application of green production methods, and the societal adoption of an environmentally friendly lifestyle.

Recently, Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and Guangzhou have accelerated their green transition by rapidly replacing polluting internal combustion engine vehicles with clean electric vehicles. Other Tier 2 and 3 cities are following suit.

Shanghai plans to phase out all buses and taxis on city streets by the end of 2027 and replace 6,200 buses and 11,000 taxis with electric vehicles. Beijing, in turn, has drawn up a plan to increase the number of buses, trucks and cars powered by alternative fuels to at least two million by 2025.

The electric vehicle market in China is experiencing an unprecedented boom and China is at the forefront of this revolution.

Between 2012 and 2023, energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) fell by more than 26 percent and 35 percent, respectively, contributing to visible improvements in environmental quality – bluer skies, greener mountains and clearer water.
