Maker Monday: An easy way for kids to get creative with screen printing

Welcome to another Maker Monday activity, Kidsburgh families! We’re excited to offer you this free Maker activity – a “Let’s Try” video created by our friends at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. This week’s project teaches kids the art of screen printing.
As with the Embroidery project We have introduced you to this new project that requires an item you may not have around the house – an embroidery hoop. These are available for just a few dollars at Michael’s, Joan or through Amazon. All other materials are things you probably have on hand or can get at a dollar store.

You can find all the details on materials and instructions here. Watch the video below to learn each simple step. (You may want to watch the video once before you start.)

A note for the child Manufacturer: Please work with a parent or guardian on each project and always use extreme caution when using any type of tools.

Materials needed for Maker Monday:

  • Embroidery frame
  • an old pair of tights or stockings (only the bottom part)
  • Scissors
  • Newspaper or other waste paper
  • a pen or marker
  • thick paper or cardboard
  • Fabric paint or screen printing ink
  • a piece of corrugated cardboard, cut to 2 x 4 inches
  • an empty gift card or expired credit card

Instructions:

  • Take your embroidery hoop apart and insert the bottom half completely into the stocking.
  • Place the upper half of the embroidery frame on the lower half and stretch the fabric in the frame.
  • Cut off the top part of the stocking to create an “open” side. (see video)
  • Using your tire as a guide, draw a large circle (larger than the tire) on a piece of newspaper and cut it out.
  • Draw a design you want to screen print on this newspaper circle.
  • Cut out the design you drew. You will create a stencil: the cut out area is where the ink will go through! (see video)
  • Place the newspaper circle with your cut out design on your cardboard.
  • Place your screen on the newspaper and cardboard.
  • Open your ink or paint and use the cardboard to apply a thick line of it to the stockings above the design.
  • Then take your old plastic card and gently but firmly pull the ink over the entire motif.
  • Carefully peel the screen and the newspaper stencil off the paper.
