The final part of John Wick: Chapter 4 has left fans with many questions about what happened to their favorite hero John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves. The final scene in Chapter 4 of this series is particularly open-ended considering the thrilling action and emotional moments that have taken audiences through four films. A dramatic finale
Chapter 4 of John Wick ends with an epic battle between Caine (played by Donnie Yen) and John Wick. Set in the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris, two old friends face off under very tense circumstances. The battle is intense and eventually John Wick is fatally shot. After Caine kills him, John Wick’s death is clearly visible on the screen.
In the final scenes, we see Wick, almost dead due to his severe injury. With his last breath, he kills Marquis de Gramont, a high-ranking member of the High Table Assassins guild. With this act, he fulfills his mission to free Cain from his debts and free himself from the dangerous life he has always led.
At the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, it is not clear what happens to John Wick. Although the film hints that Wick died, there could be another version and follow-up projects for his story. An uncertain end
The end of the series is intentionally cryptic. We see a tombstone that says “Loving Husband,” referring to John Wick’s late wife. In other words, this scene implies that John Wick died there. Winston Scott, played by Ian McShane, also says “Bye Bye,” hinting at a possible conclusion to Wick’s storyline.
Wick’s actual funeral is not shown in the film, however. The final scenes are filmed from a distance, which casts doubt on what really happened to him. This has led to speculation among his fans and critics as to whether John Wick is really dead or if there is more to his story.
The alternative ending
John Wick: Chapter 4 director Chad Stahelski revealed that an alternate ending was shot. In this case, John Wick does not die at the end of the film. Stahelski explained why he and Keanu Reeves preferred a theatrical ending with ambiguity. Despite this, they shot an ending where it was clear that Wick had survived. Test audiences responded better to an ambiguous ending, so it was included in the final cut.
In addition, Stahelski is also working on an extended version of the film that could include this alternate ending. This extended version could shed more light on what happened to Wick and give viewers a different perspective on his ultimate fate in previous versions.
What’s next for John Wick?
Despite the apparent finale of Chapter 4, the John Wick franchise still has a long way to go. Lionsgate, which released those films, has confirmed that John Wick 5 is already in the works. This means that there could be a chance for a John Wick comeback, but how that would have happened remains unknown.
Keanu Reeves has said he would act in another film if it had an interesting plot. Of course, he made it clear that he wanted his character to live in peace, but at the same time he wanted to be given room to return if a good story was created.
What about spinoffs and extensions
Aside from the possibility of John Wick 5, there are several projects in the John Wick universe that expand it. One of them is Ballerina, a spin-off starring Ana De Armas. The film takes place after John Wick: Chapter 3 and before Chapter 4. Therefore, the film will reveal more about the Assassin society. Also, Reeves will appear as one of the supporting actors that give meaning to the main series.
Another spinoff starring Caine, played by Donnie Yen, is also in the pipeline. This film will explore Caine’s fate and some loose ends from Chapter Four, particularly what happened after Shimazu Akira showed up during the credits seeking revenge but achieving nothing at all.
